A Word, A Look returns us to world of the Wentworths five years after we last saw them in For You Alone.
The Captain was given a plum assignment by an influential patron, and he and Anne have been quietly enjoying life in a foreign port. Wentworth misses sailing but has found unique challenges and professional success on land. Suddenly, and mysteriously, their life in Minorca is upended and they are dispatched back to England. There is an air of disfavor about them, which is forgotten when Anne goes into labor and delivers a healthy baby on the voyage home. Once onshore, Wentworth is put on half-pay with no explanations and to await another assignment. Hopefully.
They first visit Bath to find Sir Walter Elliot is in poor health and living with his married daughter, Elizabeth. The baronet is finally living as he thinks a baronet should at Belsom Park, the ancestral home of Admiral Patrick McGillvarys. Wentworth dreaded the idea of his good friend marrying his sister-in-law, but what could he do to stop it. Over their years away, Elizabeth and Anne have forged an interesting relationship by corresponding. There are others in Bath who’s lives have changed and eager to bring the Wentworths up-to-date.
Travelling to Somersetshire to visit the Crofts, still living in Kellynch Hall, Anne and Frederick find there have been changes for them and the rest of the Somerset relations as well. The black-hearted William Elliot returns and causes trouble for both families. His schemes even put Frederick’s brother, Edward, the perpetual curate of a northern parish into turmoil. There are also good things afoot when someone recieves a title in recognition for helping the Crown. Timothy Harville is now a skilled craftsman, much in demand. the Wentworth’s are grateful for this when they decide to settle in the area and look to buy a home.
